SHAPE America

Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America, is headquartered in Reston, VA, 25 miles west of Washington, D.C. Let’s Move! Active Schools is the national solution to ensure 60 minutes of physical activity is the new norm for schools. Powered by a national collaboration of leading health and education organizations, Let’s Move! Active Schools streamlines the selection of physical activity and physical education programs, resources, professional development and funding opportunities, and delivers a customized Action Plan – making it simple for teachers and strategic for administrators to cultivate active learning environments. American Camp Association

The American Camp Association (ACA) is a community of camp professionals who, for 100 years, have joined together to share our knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. ACA believes that young people benefit emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually from physical activity and spending time in close contact with the natural world. These connections are essential to healthy development.

ANNIKA Foundation

The ANNIKA Foundation teaches children the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition, and offers aspiring junior golfers opportunities to pursue their dreams. A primary focus for the ANNIKA Foundation is to identify the greatest needs and opportunities to make an impact by developing sports and physical fitness programs for kids. A key focus is to provide resources that increase participation and access where it is not currently available or affordable, and promote awareness for the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. The First Tee

The First Tee (www.thefirsttee.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization whose mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. With its home office at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., The First Tee reaches young people on golf courses, in elementary schools and at other youth-serving locations.  Since its inception in 1997, The First Tee has introduced the game of golf and its values to nine million young people in all 50 United States and select international locations. 

CAHPERD

The California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD), founded in 1930, is a non-profit, voluntary membership corporation formed exclusively to promote the organizing and progress of school, community and statewide programs of health, physical education, recreation and dance which will embody such opportunities and which will insure the inclusion of such programs within the most appropriate philosophical and social context of life in California.

GAHPERD (Georgia Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance)

GAHPERD (Georgia Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) is leading the way in Georgia by uniting professional and community organizations to achieve our vision of a healthier nation! We provide our members with a resource rich, interactive website (www.gahperd.org) and two exceptional professional growth opportunities annually: Our State Conference in Atlanta or Savannah, and the nationally recognized Share the Wealth Conference on Jekyll Island. GAHPERD believes professional involvement and working together are keys to success! We proudly partner with SPARK and hope our combined energy and efforts bring forth positive change for physical education and physical educators!

Healthy Kids Challenge

SPARK is proud to offer the Healthy Kids Challenge (HKC) nutrition education program. HKC is a nationally recognized program created by an exemplary team of registered, licensed dietitians with many years of school, program, and community wellness experience. HKC uses the most current evidence-based recommendations of Centers for Disease Control and other leading organizations, and offers solutions through workshops, events, toolkits, a website, newsletters and programming.

Healthy Kids Out of School

Healthy Kids Out of School is an initiative of ChildObesity180 in collaboration with Tufts University. In 2011, the initiative convened leaders from nine of the nation’s leading out-of-school-time organizations to develop and adopt universal nutrition and physical activity principles from a broad list of evidence-based recommendations for combating childhood obesity. The principles are:

  • Drink Right: Choose water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages;
  • Move More: Boost movement and physical activity in all programs; and
  • Snack Smart: Fuel up on fruits and vegetables.

In 2013, Healthy Kids Out of School launched the Healthy Kids Hub (HealthyKidsHub.org) to connect out-of-school-time program staff and volunteers with educational materials, products, and services to help them overcome financial and logistical barriers and implement the three guiding principles.

Healthy Lifestyles Choices

SPARK has selected Healthy Lifestyle Choices (HLC) as our Health Education partner for grades PreK-8. HLC is a non-profit organization that provides children with the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively, resolve conflict peacefully, think and act safely, balance a healthy diet with physical activity and avoid harmful substances.

ETR High School HealthSmart

SPARK has partnered with ETR to provide the High School HealthSmart program for grades 9-12. ETR offers science-based health and education products and programs, providing solutions that work for health professionals, educators and consumers throughout the United States. ETR is a private nonprofit organization, with a multidisciplinary staff of health educators, program developers, trainers, curriculum specialists, writers, editors, graphic artists, librarians, publication and distribution experts, technologists and social scientists.

Healthy Weight Commitment

The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a CEO-led organization, is a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity–especially childhood obesity–by 2015. It’s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 170 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and NGOs, and professional sports organizations. The Foundation promotes ways to help people achieve a healthy weight through energy balance–calories in and calories out. It focuses on three critical areas–the marketplace, the workplace and schools. Learn More

Highmark Foundation

In 2006, the Highmark Foundation launched Highmark Healthy High 5, a five-year, $100 million children’s health promotion initiative to address five critical areas affecting children’s health. The project’s goal is to give young people to tools, resources and knowledge needed to live healthier lives by making informed choices. This project targets children and adolescents ages 6 to 18 by raising awareness, changing behavior through grants and programs, and provides resources and knowledge to parents, schools, and the communities served by the Highmark Foundation. The five critical areas are nutrition and physical activity (to fight childhood obesity), grieving, self-esteem and bullying prevention.

Highmark Healthy High 5 chose SPARK as its partner to improve the quantity and quality of physical activity in after school programs. The after school programs participate in training and receive SPARK curriculum, equipment and follow up support so their programs work and last. To date, 173 active sites and over 250 youth leaders have become trained and their after school programs are lighting up children’s lives throughout Pennsylvania.

ICAN Foundation

ICAN Foundation was founded by Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints’ RB, in response to the ongoing issue with childhood obesity. ICAN Foundation was established in 2012 as a non-profit, public charity to prevent and educate about the ongoing and rising issues of childhood obesity in the United States. Obesity has a profound effect and increases the child’s risk of numerous health problems, and it also can create emotional and social problems. Obese children are also more likely to be obese as adults, increasing their risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke. National Parks and Recreation Association

Park and recreation agencies are the health and wellness leaders in their communities. Having a safe place to go after school, being active and eating healthy are vital services park and recreation agencies provide. That’s why the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) created Commit to Health—a campaign that supports the implementation and evaluation of Healthy Eating, Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in park and recreation sites across the country. MEND

MEND is the world’s largest provider of evidence-based family weight management programs that combine behavior change, physical activity and nutritional counseling in a community setting. Over 30,000 participants in 5 countries have already benefited from attending a MEND 7-13 Program, an evidence-based healthy lifestyle program for 7-13 year-olds and their families. In the US, the MEND Foundation is dedicated to inspiring children, families and adults to lead and sustain fitter, healthier and happier lives – with a focus on changing the behaviors that cause overweight and obesity. The Foundation distributes MEND’s programs with a specific intent to reach low-income families in under-served communities. MEND 7-13 is currently being run in diverse communities across the US, in partnership with YMCAs and other community-based organizations.

SHAPE America Advisory Council

SHAPE America Advisory Council provides a forum for idea sharing among companies with diverse perspectives but a single purpose – preventing and reducing obesity through quality physical education, sport and physical activity programs.

Corporate Council members:

  • Stay informed about key issues surrounding physical activity promotion and obesity prevention.
  • Obtain a greater understanding of advancements and opportunities in public policy, professional practice, and physical education, sport, and physical activity programming.
  • Gain networking opportunities with nationally-known health, education, and public policy experts.
  • Learn about national and state efforts to increase physical activity and decrease obesity.
  • Demonstrate leadership and support for this national effort.

National AfterSchool Association 

The mission of the National AfterSchool Association is to foster development, provide education, and encourage advocacy for the out-of-school-time community. NAA is the membership association for professionals who work with children and youth in diverse school and community-based settings to provide a wide variety of extended learning opportunities and care during out-of-school hours. NCAAHPERD

The North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NCAAHPERD) is one of the oldest professional associations in North Carolina dedicated to the advancement of research and education within the fields of Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

NCAAHPERD is an alliance of six associations:

  1. Dance Association for North Carolina Educators (DANCE)
  2. North Carolina Association for Athletic Education (NCAAE)
  3. North Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education (NCAAHE)

PHIT AmericaPHIT Logo

PHIT America is a national charity, campaign and advocacy initiative to get America, especially children, more active, fit and healthy. PHIT America attacks the ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ by implementing school based ‘pro-activity’ programs while educating parents and our US legislators on the issues and our solutions. PHIT America focuses on the following initiatives:

  • Awarding PHIT America GO! Grants to needy schools to jump-start school-based PE programs
  • Educating the parents and the sports, fitness and PE industry on the issues and our initiatives
  • Passing ‘pro-activity’ legislation such as the PEP Program and PHIT Act

President’s Challenge

The President’s Challenge is the physical activity and fitness awards program of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program provides a free, motivational online physical activity tracking tool for all ages to earn Presidential recognition. Additionally, the popular physical fitness test offers awards for students of all levels of achievement and abilities. Safe Routes to School National Partnership

The mission of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership (National Partnership) is to advance safe walking and bicycling to and from schools, to improve the health and wellbeing of kids of all races, income levels and abilities and to foster the creation of healthy communities for everyone. The National Partnership offers depth of expertise, a national support network of more than 800 organizations, and know-how to help make communities and schools safer, healthier, and more active. USA Field Hockey

The worldwide leader in Sport USA Field Hockey is the national governing body of field hockey in the USA. Our mission is to Grow the Game and win internationally. SPARK is working with USA Field Hockey to provide lessons for grades 3-5 that are based on age-appropriate field hockey core themes and concepts in line with SHAPE America national PE standards and grade level outcomes.

We Can!®

We Can! is a science-based national education program developed by the NIH – a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – to help children ages 8-13 stay at a healthy weight through improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time. The program offers flexible, turn-key resources complete with partnership ideas and outreach opportunities to unite community organizations. Four of the National Institutes of Health have combined their unique resources and activities to create We Can!: the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; and the National Cancer Institute.
